La Paz

The relaxed capital of Baja California Sur, where the Sea of Cortez meets a walkable malecon, Balandra's turquoise shallows, and a real Mexican city pace.

Area guide

A calmer coast on the Sea of Cortez

About two hours north of Los Cabos, La Paz is the unhurried capital of Baja California Sur. Its palm-lined malecon traces a calm, swimmable bay, and life still moves at the rhythm of a working Mexican city rather than a resort strip. Sunsets here glow over the Sea of Cortez, the body of water Jacques Cousteau called the aquarium of the world.

Just outside town lies Balandra, the protected lagoon often named Mexico's most beautiful beach, where shallow turquoise water stretches for hundreds of meters. Between roughly October and April, snorkelers swim alongside whale sharks in the bay, while sea lions, dolphins and rays draw divers year-round. For buyers, La Paz offers authentic neighborhoods, real local services and notably stronger value per square meter than Cabo's prime corridor.
